Let’s Begin: Road to Self-Discovery

It’s simple and far too easy to underestimate the significance of holistic wellbeing in the hectic and demanding society we live in. Well-being goes beyond “feeling good”, which we all say… everyday, more than twice a day, lying with a straight or happy face. Living not in the moment, but in expectation and/or avoidance.

“How are you today?” “I’m good” we say. Mask still on, we like it this way.

We say we are “good” but are we really? Why is it “good”? What do you what to say really? Why didn’t you say wonderful or great? Why didn’t you say sad or lost? Why didn’t you say angry or frustrated? It’s because “good” is the base level. Everyone wants to be good. Everyone can be good. No one really cares about the definition of your meaning of “good.” It’s just accepted and it’s simple. Mask on and walk away.

Very few strive for “great” on the day-to-day. And no, I am not saying any one person is great everyday, but let me ask you… How many great days can you claim?… How much work did you put into those days?…  Because “great” days don’t come easy. You have been living the easy days more often than you think. Those “easy” days are your “good” days. Because when you put in the work for “great” days, everyone will know and good isn’t in your vocabulary. Mask on with a sad face.

So what is holistic wellness and what does it have to do with me answering a question with “good”? I’m glad you asked.

Holistic wellness is more than a feeling. It’s more than feeling good or great. It’s more than the physical, it’s more than what you ate. It’s more about connections and purpose. Feeling and understanding the reasons behind the seasons. Because that’s what holistic wellness is. It’s the everchanging seasons of being human. Holistic wellness ever changes with your seasons and your seasons alone. Not one person has the same year as you. Not one person has traveled and seen what you saw. No one has heard what you heard. Your wellness IS completely different from mine and theirs. You are the only one that knows your valleys and mountains, your forests and meadows. and if you don’t like what you see, feel, or hear you alone have the power to change it. Your wellness, healing, and health is yours alone. Having periods of growth, redirection, maintenance, pruning, regrowth, and death. In that order or another, varying from time to time. The cycle isn’t linear, it’s circular, zig zag, and sometimes seems backwards. It hops arounds and can transform at any given moment. It is mixed and matched when you see fit. Depending on your decisions and discipline to self.

But like a few of us, we tend to run away from nature’s changes. Running away from holistic balance, meaning we sometimes run from ourselves, having preferences and what have you. Because when thinking of balance, who wants to acknowledge the “other” side? Which makes you avoid the seasons of growth and rebirth, diminishing its meaning and purpose. Missing out on lessons, knowledge, and wisdom. Simply not being able to succeed to the next level. 

True well-being goes beyond simply being free of disease and feelings of emotions. Being holistically well involves acknowledgment of the complicated interactions between our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual selves. Our physical being is often center stage when people think about health and wellness, which limits its reach. We need to instead place a strong emphasis on the necessity of harmony and balance of the entire individual. Improving every aspect of life, visiting all of our valleys and deserts, pulling the weeds, documenting what works and what doesn’t. Enable your ability to form and create. To shape and transform.

Developing a holistic view of self can improve your general quality of life and open parts of your map you never expected to explore or never knew could exist. Discovering a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose by allowing yourself time, space, and grace to be free and find the answers to questions your heart yearns for whether you know it or not.

But where do you start? You have valleys, deserts, and mountains, shadows and dark places you unknowingly avoid. You are out creating chaos and peace, exploring with little to no knowledge of your goals and what could possibly be ahead, so let’s do something different. Before we continue our day, let’s look in the mirror and ask this one question. Who am I and what am I capable of?…
